Jarvis Butts, convicted in the killing of Na'Ziyah Harris, has died behind bars only weeks after receiving his sentence.
Download NowMichigan Department of Corrections has confirmed that Jarvis Butts died Thursday at the Charles Egeler Reception and Guidance Center in Jackson.
Officials say the death is currently being investigated by Michigan State Police and is being reported as a suspected suicide.
According to a statement, prison staff attempted life-saving measures, but were unsuccessful.
Butts, 43, had been sentenced just two weeks ago to 35–60 years in prison after pleading guilty to second-degree murder in the killing of Na'Ziyah Harris, a 13-year-old girl.
He also received multiple additional sentences for child sexual assault.

Harris was last seen in Detroit in January 2024 after getting off a bus. Investigators say she met Butts the same day she disappeared.
Prosecutors revealed disturbing details, including allegations that Butts had groomed the victim over time and had searched online for abortion-related methods prior to her death.
Authorities also confirmed Harris was pregnant at the time.

Authorities confirmed that the body of Na'Ziyah Harris has never been found. However, as part of his plea agreement, Jarvis Butts was required to provide a statement disclosing the location of her remains in an effort to bring some closure to the family.
Kym Worthy emphasized that revealing this information was a critical part of the agreement, stating it was essential to give the victim’s family at least some sense of closure.
