BREAKING: Thousands of Americans Could Lose Their Passports Starting Friday

A major change is coming for thousands of U.S. citizens — and it could stop many people from traveling internationally overnight.

The U.S. State Department has announced that it will begin revoking passports for parents who owe large amounts of unpaid child support. According to officials, the crackdown starts Friday and initially targets people who owe $100,000 or more.

Around 2,700 Americans could immediately lose their passports under the new policy.

But this may only be the beginning.

Officials say the program will soon expand to include anyone owing more than $2,500 in unpaid child support — a threshold created under a 1996 law that was rarely enforced until now.

That means thousands more Americans could soon face travel restrictions.

What Happens If Your Passport Is Revoked?

If a passport is revoked:

  • The holder will no longer be able to use it for international travel

  • They must pay or resolve the debt before getting a new passport

  • Americans currently abroad may need emergency travel documents from a U.S. embassy to return home

The State Department says the move is designed to pressure parents into paying overdue child support.

Officials also revealed that after news of the policy spread earlier this year, hundreds of parents reportedly started paying their debts to avoid losing their passports.

Why This Is Making Headlines

Many Americans are shocked because until now, the rule mainly affected passport renewals. Under the new system, even active passports can now be cancelled.

The government says the policy has already helped states collect hundreds of millions of dollars in unpaid support over the years.

Social media users are now debating whether the rule is fair — while others say it’s necessary to protect children and enforce responsibility.

One thing is clear:
For thousands of Americans, international travel may suddenly become impossible.
