Emily Gregory is Donald Trump’s new state representative and a new hope for Democrats in Florida.
Orlando Correspondence — Following an unexpected win in a Florida special election, Emily Gregory expressed her enthusiasm about representing everyone in her district — including Donald Trump.
“I’d be happy to have a conversation,” the Democrat told the Associated Press on Wednesday. “He’s welcome to reach out, as I now serve as his state representative.”
Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate falls within Gregory’s district, which is centered around Palm Beach. While state legislative races don’t usually draw national attention, Democrats nationwide reacted with excitement to the unusual situation of their longtime political rival being represented by one of their own.
Gregory’s win adds to a growing trend of Democratic gains in recent special elections, signaling possible momentum heading into the midterm elections — a key test of Trump’s second term. At 40 years old and running for office for the first time, Gregory — a local entrepreneur who runs a fitness business for pregnant and postpartum women — managed to defeat a Republican candidate endorsed by Trump, who had highlighted strong backing from his Palm Beach County supporters.
